experiences.
What was most interesting to us is
exemplified in two themes that become
apparent in students' narratives. First,
there are the students for whom this
is not true. There were students who
developed a diverse network of friends,
often in their first year, and kept that
network through their four years at
college. Or there were students who
chose to move beyond social groups
that were quickly becoming more
homogeneous and actively sought out
peers who were different from them.
These students developed rich, diverse
relationships after their first year not
because of college practices but because
of their own choices.
Second, even those who as upperdivision students recognized that their
social groups lacked diversity mourned
the loss of interactions with difference
and sought to find ways other than
social networks to include these
interactions.
Talking Stick: If that is indeed
the case, does that make it more
important that, during the first year,
students are exposed to as wide a
variety of experiences as possible
so they can make a more informed
choice when they begin to focus?
You talk about it a bit when you
discuss students "going deep or
going broad."
We would never object to exposing
students, or anyone else for that matter,
to a wide a variety of experiences. The
fact that colleges strive to do exactly
this creates multiple opportunities for
students to learn about themselves
and to practice making the kinds of
decisions that can lead to a fulfilling
and rewarding life after college.
With respect to the "going broad"
and "going deep" friendship patterns
discussed in our book, students find
real value in both the deep and broad
approaches. We do, too, and so we
want to be careful not to suggest that
