In March 2015, Berea College in
Kentucky achieved Living Building
Challenge Petal Certification for their
Deep Green Residence Hall. (The nod
to the flower is from the institute's
belief that buildings should be as
efficient and as beautiful as a flower.)
Designed by architect firm Hastings &
Chivetta with Helmut + Bicknese, this
42,000-square-foot building houses
approximately 120 students within a
residential setting that operates under
the four areas of the petal designation,
which are place, equity, energy, and
beauty. It utilizes 114 photovoltaic
panels, a geothermal heat pump
system, Energy Star-rated appliances,
and low-flow plumbing fixtures. Prior
to 2015, Deep Green had earned LEED
Platinum certification. At the time, its

of a campus and ultimately have the
power to transmit that ethos in a

students bond with one another and
adopt institutional values and norms.
