READY, SET, APPLY
students and staff alike, and it was very
redundant. We have streamlined most
of our processes and have tried to make
things as efficient as possible. We first
had to make a commitment to each
other, and since that happened the sky
has truly been the limit.
Lake: Working in residence life, which
has changed dramatically over the last
several years as student needs have
changed, it has become very important
to get a sense of a candidate's resiliency. For example, in the case of hiring
professional residence hall directors, it
is not enough to be able to determine if
the candidate is administratively strong
or has great community development
skills. They must have the ability to
be able to ride the wave of student
crisis. In the residence halls that house
our first-year students, the first three
months of the academic year can be
consumed with roommate problems,
behavioral incidents, medical and mental health emergencies, and students'
difficulties in adjusting and adapting to
school. Additionally, parental involvement in any or all of these cases brings
another layer of necessary management
and communication. Notably, what has
changed in the last several years is the
need to look for an employee's ability to
emotionally multitask.
Myrick: It has always been important
that an employee is genuinely interested in the position for which they
are applying. It has become even more
important to me that an employee also
sufficiently understands the job duties
and is interested in not only the position, but the department, institution,
and location of the institution. It is
very challenging to hire someone who
is really excited about a job but does
not clearly understand all that it entails
or has the ability to navigate transition
to a new department, institution, or
location.
Przywara: During the process, I have
Mount Pleasant, Texas
begun to spend more time talking
about the college and how residential
life fits in. We are a small private liberal
arts college. If we have a candidate
whose experience is solely in larger
public institutions, I spend time talking
about a smaller class size, academic
achievements, and other demographics of our community. This is not
to say that someone with different
experiences will not make a successful
transition as much as I want candidates
to know the culture of Skidmore. I am
an alumna of Skidmore, so I had the
foundation of the campus; however,
there are many aspects of the campus
that have changed.

Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) is
located in a beautiful rural setting near the Chapel
Hill community. Through an extensive visioning plan,
the campus now encompasses more than 375 acres
and maintains student housing facilities for up to
214 occupants. Athletes make up roughly 50 percent
of on-campus residents, including those in baseball,
softball, girls' and boys' soccer, and rodeo. Rodeo
athletes are a big focal point for NTCC residential
life, as Residential Housing West is a lodge-style
one-story design where student rodeo athletes ride
their horses right up to their front door. Residential
Housing East is a newer apartment-style design built
in 2010 that offers private rooms and 24/7 access to
an adjoining fitness center.
