Transformative Residential Programming
at the University of Southern California
Improving college access and opportunity for low-income African American and
Latinx youth often depends on the tenacity of those students to take risks they
may or may not be encouraged to pursue. Learning what choices are available and
whether or not to risk pursuing those choices can be difficult and disillusioning.
For many young people, the opportunities they view as truly possible often exclude
a four-year college degree. However, residential college and university programs
are uniquely positioned to change this perception by adopting a "You belong here"
mindset and inviting low-income youth to campus immersion events.
With this mindset, the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles began plans in 2013 for College Access Day, a one-day immersion experience
focused on gaining the tools needed for successful admission to college. Residential student volunteers were paired with high school participants to share their insights on successfully navigating the college admissions process, financing their
education, getting involved in student organizations, and transitioning to life on
campus. They worked through several personal questions: What was it that these
new USC students/residents had learned, experienced, or gained during high
school that best prepared them for college admission? How did they know how
and when to apply? How soon had their academic preparation for college begun?
How had they mastered the SAT and AP exams? Who were the most important
influences in their lives? What odds (personal, familial, and/or financial) had they
overcome to arrive here?
The first College Access Day in 2013 hosted about 40 high school students.
In February 2018, USC welcomed almost 300 participants from 10 urban high
schools throughout Los Angeles County. As future plans continue to develop
for this annual event, they will align with USC Residential Education's yearlong
commitment to service.
