Candles.
Underage drinkers. Violated
quiet hours. Disgruntled
roommates. Vandalized walls. Undocumented pets.
These are only a few of the reasons that college and
university residents may find themselves a part of the
student conduct process. These are also only a few of
the reasons that many campus housing and residence
life professionals - even if the word "conduct" doesn't
appear as part of their job title - must be well versed
in the student conduct process.
The approach that these professionals take in
meeting this challenge is guided by the evolution
of higher education as well as by their institutional
conduct philosophies. For most in higher education today, the approach to disciplining students
for violating policies and codes is to focus more on
developmental outcomes than punitive sanctions; the
conduct process is seen as an educational opportunity
where the goal is to change student behavior, not the
student. Residence life professionals begin to shape
conduct policy through the establishment of written
and unwritten guidelines that set clear expectations
for student behavior and create a sense of community
among students. Most housing professionals would
agree on an underlying philosophy that residence
halls should be living and learning communities
where students feel safe in their growth and development, where diversity is accepted, and mistakes can
become learning opportunities.
When a conduct process that follows such a philosophy is successfully implemented, incidents such
as underage drinking or quiet hour violations are no
longer just red flags on a report, but are chances to
educate students about personal safety, the dangers
of alcohol, consideration for others, and much more
while leaving room to repair any damage done to
the hall's sense of community. To accomplish this,
though, requires a commitment. It may be easier
to handle conduct violations as if they were transactions - break a rule, face the corresponding punishment - but the conduct process should be built on a
foundation upon which staff, departments, and institutions can build their practice, policy, and strategy
to reach their desired outcome: to educate students.
