STAY POSITIVE
residents. Residential environments are
particularly important as settings for
positive education "due to the central
place they occupy in many students'
experience of university life. . . . In our
view, a positive university will include
great emphasis on residential environments because of their ability to impact
the whole student."
Many of the strategies used in
positive education are similar to what
students experience in a living-learning community or as part of residence
life programs such as communitybuilding events, programs related to
cultural awareness, student awards,
and academic coaching. The UCT residence life team have overseen the student leadership planning of multiple
residence orientation programs that
promote positive experiences, engagement with a new residence environment and its community, and positive

relationships with that residential
community. Annual evaluations have
shown how their orientation, Residence O-week, plays a pivotal role in
promoting a strong sense of belonging
for residential students.
Students also have an opportunity
to participate in a multilingual tutoring
program that provides access to hundreds of residential tutors who can offer
peer-to-peer academic support in their
own home language. There are also
multiple internal and inter-residence
sports leagues and activities aimed at
promoting both vitality and a sense of
achievement and engagement, and a
residence mentoring program offers
students a chance to engage with mentors as they transition into a living and
learning environment.
Faculty collaboration resulting in an
array of partnerships has formed over
the years to enable students to mean-
ingfully engage with faculty, staff, and
their peers outside of the classroom.
At UCT, all this work has, as planned,
improved students' experiences in
campus housing. In the most recent of
the annual living and learning surveys,
the strongest statement made by students was "My experience in residence
has been positive." Based on 1,249
responses, more than 85 percent agreed
or strongly agreed with this statement.
Positive psychology and its applications constitute an approach to experience that is far from being one-sided.
As Seligman shared at the 5th World
Congress on Positive Psychology in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada, "flourishing can only occur in the presence
of both positivity and negativity." It's
no secret that students are faced with
unique realities and challenges that
require care, sensitivity, growth, and
understanding. The added paradigm
