efore retiring in
2015, David Stephen served twelve
years as director of university housing and food
service at California State
University, Chico. His career in campus housing
administration spanned
44 years during which he
held senior and mid-level
administrative positions
at the University of Redlands, College of Idaho, Oregon State University, Arizona State University, University of Washington, and The University of Akron.
Since 1981, he has been active with ACUHO-I, serving on 17
Association committees/task forces and chairing six. He was elected
to the ACUHO-I Executive Board on three occasions as the Western
District Representative, Board Secretary, and presidential track. He
also served one year with the ACUHO-I Foundation Board and recently completed a three-year term on the Regional Cabinet.
In 1997, he received the ACUHO-I Leadership and Service
Award. He has presented programs at regional and international conferences on 16 occasions and served as National Housing Training
Institute (NHTI) faculty. In June 2013, he received The Parthenon
Award. On two occasions he received the ACUHO-I Foundation of
Excellence Award. He has been an ACUHO-I Foundation Major Donor on three occasions.
Stephen held volunteer, appointed and/or elected positions in the
NWACUHO, AIMHO, GLACUHO, and WACUHO regional associations. His 13 years of service to NWACUHO culminated as Regional President. In 1990, NWACUHO established the David B. Stephen
Leadership and Service Award. In 2018, NWACUHO presented him
the Kay Rich Lifetime Achievement Award. In May 2016, the Department of University Housing and Food Service, California State University, Chico established the Dr. David Stephen Community Mentor
Award. He holds honorary memberships in several higher education
organizations including the National Residence Hall Honorary, Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society, and Omicron Delta
Kappa Society. Currently, he serves as principal lead for DBS Consultation Services. Stephen holds degrees from: Los Angeles Valley College (AA); Northern Arizona University (BS); University of Redlands
(MA); and, Oregon State University (M.Ed. and Ed.D.)
