project at Arizona State University in
Tempe, with more than 1,500 residential beds, included creating breezeways
to accelerate airflow in a hot environment, integrating vertical fins on
the south side of the building so the
building can self-shade, and installing systems to harvest rain water. "We
wanted to celebrate the desert climate
and not fight against it," Curtin says.
"As designers we try to think in a very
resilient way. You can incorporate
savings and reduce carbon footprints
with buildings, and it also has to be
beautiful." Resiliency can also be
expressed in a less tangible way. "If
we design something that people like
and connect to, they will take care of
it, and that is resiliency too," says Lou
Bieker, principal with 4240 Architec-
ture in Denver, Colorado. "Create a
place that people want to come back to
in 50 years, and you will have devoted
alumni and a resilient building."
Buildings are being made more
resilient with rooftop solar arrays that
feed battery back-ups in the event of a
power outage, sun shades that offset
increasing radiant heat, more efficient heating and cooling systems to
keep pace with more extreme temperatures, and flexible designs that
adapt to future needs. At the same
time, students are being taught about
climate change resiliency, particularly
when they live on campus. Educating
humans to adapt to climate change is
critical according to Esteban. "We need
to become more tolerable to flexible
temps beyond the current range of al-
ways being between 68 and 72 degrees
indoors with 40 percent humidity in
winter and summer." Behavior change
campaigns in campus housing can
teach residents to tolerate lower indoor
temperatures in the winter by wearing
layers and to tolerate warmer temperatures in the summer by using window
shades to block radiant heat. Students
in campus housing can also develop
sustainable habits by taking shorter
showers, utilizing public transportation, living in smaller spaces, becoming more aware of their waste stream,
and eating more local and sustainable
food.
"Sustainability is now a more
mature field," says Andrews. "With
frameworks and data now in place
we're getting beyond technology as the
