Art Every Day
The housing department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
has partnered with the program "Arts Everywhere" on their campus to
bring art directly to the residence hall. The Morrison Art Studio opened
on October 8 in UNC's
Morrison Residence Hall
and is designed to offer
space for art majors as
well as other community
members who just want to
come in and draw, paint, or
sketch. The "Arts Everywhere" motto is that people
should experience art
every day, and this space
provides an ideal opportunity. In a press release,
Allan Blattner, director of
housing and residential
education, put it this way:
"If we have an art student
who wants a high-quality
experience right in their
building, they can live in
Morrison and have that. If they've never picked up a paintbrush and want
to give it a try, they can go downstairs and have at it." The studio will be
managed partly by a fine arts graduate student and will offer free workshops for students, faculty, and staff.

Helping Homeless Students
Tacoma Community College, in partnership with the Tacoma Housing
Authority, has sought to provide assistance to its students who are homeless,
or run the risk of becoming homeless, through the College Housing
Assistance Program. The pilot program began in September 2014, offering
rent assistance to 47 struggling students. Within three years, the encouraging
results prompted them to expand the program to include 150 students. Sixty
percent of those in the program graduated or continued their enrollment
compared to 16 percent of homeless or near-homeless students who were not
in the program. In addition, the average GPA of those in the program was a
3.05, higher than the general average GPA of all students at the college, a 2.97.
To remain in the program, students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0, make
notable progress towards a degree, and participate in support services. The
program has already served 175 students since its start in 2014 and is on track
to continue creating opportunities for students of Tacoma Community College.
