In addition, housing organizations
and non-profits had similar high
points and low points within the seven
dimensions, which is not surprising
since campus housing departments
are also mission-driven, motivated
by high expectations, and required to
operate with limited resources.
The study also examined whether
or not perceptions were affected by
specific institutional characteristics.
Though involvement in a public-private partnership did not make a significant difference in the perceptions that
SHOs had about their department's
capacity to learn, there were significant
differences between departments that
reported to student affairs and those
that did not. Organizational set-up and
institutional type also had a significant
impact on perceptions; for example,
unified departments showed significantly greater evidence of promoting a
culture of dialogue and inquiry, team
learning, and connections to the environment.

respondents recognize a strong leadership for learning in their departments.
Since leadership is a strong predictor
of organizational performance, campus
housing departments should continue
investing in leadership that models
learning, removes barriers to learning,
and sets the vision toward becoming a
learning organization. They should also
assess how they are storing and sharing information; from share drives to
annual reports, how is what people are
learning being utilized and examined?
Departments need to find opportunities
to make the documenting and sharing of learning a part of their everyday
work life. Reports, tools, and resources
should not just be filed away - they
should be highlighted and referenced.
The DLOQ is more than a research tool; it is a means of helping
organizations build and maintain a
strong and pervasive learning culture.
Campus housing departments can use
the questionnaire to examine all the
dimensions of a learning organization,
and results can help tell the story of
what the department does well, what
it needs to improve, and what the
