Inclusive Options
Gender-inclusive housing is increasingly
commonplace in campus residence halls.
In the 2018-19 Campus Housing Index
results, 66 percent of the 326 responding
institutions said they provided it in some
form. However, there remains an array
of policies and practices related to this
subject as campuses determine what
works best for them and the students.
This case was made in a recent The
Journal of College and University Student
Housing article, "Better Than Most:
Trans* Perspectives on Gender-Inclusive
Housing" (Vol. 45, No. 1, 2018). In the
article (for which authors Rachel Wagner,
Susan Marine, and Z Nicolazzo received
the Betty L. Harrah Journal Manuscript
of the Year award), interviewed students
explained how they had "disparate
experiences accessing gender-inclusive
housing depending on the campus and,
at times, within the same campus."
While students were "overwhelmingly
positive" in appreciating the genderinclusive option (hence the title, "Better
Than Most") there were some concerns

about access and accessibility. These
included the application process,
availability of rooms, how well publicized
the option was, and - in at least one case -
the location and cost of the particular
hall with the gender-inclusive option.
The authors noted, "While generally
originating from the activism of trans*
students, gender-inclusive housing is
often now perceived of (and marketed
as) a resource for all students. Framing it
this way shifts the focus from trans* safety
and empowerment to more choices and
options for all communities."
For the third year, the Campus Housing
Index survey asked if preference for
gender-inclusive housing was given to
non-gender conforming individuals.
Results showed that 50 percent did give
preference while 25 percent did not (the
remaining institutions did not provide
gender-inclusive housing). The survey
also asked more detailed questions about
which residents can apply for genderinclusive housing. Among the results:
