Sanders' research used Astin's Input-Environment-Outcome model to
measure how the residential curriculum
influenced residents. The residential curriculum survey categorized questions
into three sections: pre-college characteristics, college environments students
participated in during college (academic,
cocurricular, and housing), and outcomes.
Overall, the findings suggested that male
students had a negative relationship for
personal development, community engagement, cultural exploration, and institutional commitment as compared to
female students. Those interacting with
each other in their residence hall had a
positive relationship with each priority.
Those who self-disclosed a medical condition that limited one or more activities
had a negative relationship with personal
development, community engagement,
and institutional commitment. Lastly,
cocurricular involvement, using housing
staff as a resource, and utilizing resources
that encourage career development were
all positively related to personal development, community engagement, and cultural exploration.

2019 ACUHO-I Wall of Honor

for Iowa State University after a
47-year career in higher education;
for 27 of these, he had direct responsibilities for various aspects of student housing
and residence life. For the last 20 years, he
supported the professional preparation of
student affairs leaders, as well as academic
administration. He drew from his years of
ACUHO-I involvement, ensuring that his
research on the college student always included studying the influence of the residential experience on student learning.
Schuh is the author, co-author, or editor of more than 235 publications, including 28 books and monographs, 75 book
chapters, and more than 110 articles. His
books include Assessment Methods for
Student Affairs (with M. Lee Upcraft and
associates), One Size Does Not Fit All: Traditional and Innovative Models of Student
Affairs Practice (with Kathleen Manning
and Jillian Kinzie), and Student Success in
College (with George D. Kuh, Jillian Kinzie,
Elizabeth Whitt, and associates).

ith their Talking Stick
article "Strategic Shuffling" (November+December 2018), Mary Jordan and Vern
Rogers examined the deeper levels
of the occupancy and assignments
process. Through a number of interviews with thought-leaders in this area,
from a wide variety of institutions, the
authors explored how, before they can
set policies and practices, campuses must
consider factors such as strategic planning, institutional values and identity,
campus politics, and more.
Jordan, the associate director of student learning and engagement, and Rogers, the associate director of housing operations, explained how, "when done well,
occupancy indeed is more than a place
for everything and everything in its place.

Schuh's work with ACUHO-I included two stints as the board's publications coordinator, being a member of the
Program Committee and the Evaluation
Committee, and serving as chair of both
the Legislative Issues and Information
Committee and the Task Force on Outcomes of Residential Living Experience.
He also has helped lead the New Directions
for Student Services Sourcebook series, was
associate editor of the Journal of College
Student Development for 14 years, and was
book review editor of The Review of Higher
Education from 2008 to 2010.
