level playing ground for first-gens and
non-first-gens when they are applying
for their first job?
to me. Sometimes the directions were
wrong, or I took a different path, but
I usually found my way back. I think
this happens a great deal with first-gen
students because they may not know
the correct path, who to ask, or how to
get answers. So much of the journey is
outside of the classroom and involves
navigating processes and protocols to
successfully make it through. Overall,
I think college has the potential to level
the playing field if first-gen students
are getting the tools needed (e.g., career development, navigating campus
processes) outside of the classroom.
Smith: I think it depends on the
Belisario: Good point, James. It may
support needed and given and how
the student makes the college experience work. For me, I felt that I had to
start out on my own with no parent to
give me a roadmap on how to make
things happen, so I created my own
map based on the information given
not be the degree itself, but the relationships, experiences, and connections built while attaining the degree
that help. One of my supervisors while
I was an RA told me about an opportunity that ended up being my first job
out of undergrad.
Belisario: Say yes to opportunities
that arise. You never know when a
job, internship, club/organization,
or a contact will point you in a new
direction. For me, I joined an advisory committee on a whim, and that
involvement helped me get to know
my resident dean. The next year he
suggested I apply to be an RA, and the
rest is history.
TS: Does a college degree create a
Malagon: I so want to say yes to this
question, but I have to admit that as a
first-gen Latinx human there are other
factors which impact our journey and
the doors that eventually open for us.
I certainly agree that relationships and
connections make a big difference,
even in being aware of the possible
jobs. Use that network!
Smith: So true, Maggie. Finding that
one connection (human person) on
campus can make such a difference -
hoping they will support but also challenge you along the way. ■
