FACILITIES * Design That Bridges Borders
achieve many of its goals simply with
the architecture of a building. Residence halls can be considered pieces of
art or cultural symbols, but they must
also be functional; they must provide a
place to sleep, a social/common space,
restrooms, etc. The interaction between
the individual and the setting of the
building is just as essential in helping
to create a successful campus housing experience. It's in this interaction
with the space that we see how student
behavior can be affected. While architecture forms the space we inhabit (and it
influences our experience of that space),
the building itself can impact our comfort, safety, and desire to remain there.
As we see in the I-House design, these
elements were already considered and
included within the first design.
While the concept of intentional
design and usage is not used exclusively
for the international student population
(in fact far from it), the fact remains
that the recruitment and retention of
international students for higher education institutions in the United States
remains an important goal, as does
creating and refining programs and
facilities that accommodate them. The
2018 Open Doors Report reveals that the
number of international students in
the United States reached a new high
of 1.09 million students, even though
the percentage growth has continued to
slow since hitting a high of 10 percent
in 2014-2015. Having spaces that cater
to the experience of international
students, provide global connections
in safe and inviting accommodations,
and offer reminders of home will help
to build strong campus communities
with a true global focus. The trick is to
determine the right balance of creating a welcoming environment and
trying to re-create a space that feels like
home. Having artifacts or items such
as flags of the countries represented is
a good example of how to provide an
element of welcoming. As Ray Gasser,
director of residence education and
housing services at Michigan State,
points out, understanding both the
intersectionality of culture and the
importance of honoring multiple
cultures in student spaces is key. "You
can't treat international students as a
singular group because international
students have different needs from
various parts of the globe. Institutions
should be prepared to assess offerings,
technology, and programs annually in
order to evolve departmental support
for international students."
