4 From the Editor January 2008 Pharmaceutical Executive Europe A NICE change If you happened to have missed our extensive round of trailers towards the end of last year — in the PEE print mag, on the website and in its e-newsletters — then you may be a little surprised to be reading my ‘From the Editor’ in a digitalonly format this month. Apart from that small change (one that we feel is necessary to keep up with the ever-quickening nature of the way pharma-related information is being consumed), it is business as usual for Pharm Exec Europe. Indeed, if anything, we are harking back to an older era of the magazine, as I am particularly pleased to re-introduce the Executive Profile section. This month, Gary Noon talks to us about his 25 years’ experience, first in Big Pharma, then as president of IMS North America, and now as the CEO of a company offering drug authentication solutions. Gary’s views on patient safety and anticounterfeiting — and where the humble pharmacist should stand in all this — are enlightening. We complement Gary’s industry-focused perspective with a Q&A with Ton van Lierop, from the office of EC vice president Günter Verheugen. Mr van Lierop fills us in on how the regulators are progressing in the fight against counterfeiting, where they are taking their inspiration from and how they aim to address the challenges of the future. You can look forward to more interviews balancing industry, payer and regulator perspectives throughout 2008. Last but not least, we have some insightful perspectives on the threat (or promise, depending how you see it) of NICE-style cost-effectiveness assessments spreading from the UK to Europe. France and Germany have already established hotlines to the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence.
