Trends in packaging A s with many areas of the pharmaceutical industry, packaging has witnessed a number of changing trends in recent years. Packages have to be smaller, cheaper and more efficient, as well as, of course, complying with increasingly stringent regulations. One of the biggest changes shaping the industry at the moment is the need for increased package security. Indeed, in a recent survey conducted by PTE,* respondents voted security as the most important feature on pharma secondary packaging (Figure 1). Given the growing number of cargo thefts in both the US and Western Europe, as well as the increasing prevalence of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, it’s no wonder that package security and track and trace technologies are such hot topics in the industry. Several countries have already implemented, or are in the process of implementing, requirements for track and trace on pharmaceutical packaging, including Belgium (16-digit sequential code), France (CIP 13 codes) and Turkey (serialisation). PTE has already reported on some of the advances being made in anticounterfeit technologies in a special feature about how the industry can keep pace with the counterfeiters.
