As long as nothing is done to break the trust and acceptance people have with natural gas development in so many new areas, it would be counterproductive to further regulate or restrict hydraulic fracturing in such a way as to diminish our productivity of the resource. AMERICAN GAS: ere is serious talk that the 2012 elections will result in a Republican majority in the Senate, which would put you ﬁrst in line to chair the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. What would be your priorities in that very important position? SEN. MURKOWSKI: Energy production, reliability and affordability. Most Americans— certainly Alaskans, but I think people in all states—are amazed that the federal government works so hard to keep our resources from being developed. ere’s often a misconception that the federal government is the “landlord” of publicly held resources. It’s not— the federal government is basically a management company of the resources. But the natural gas, the oil, the minerals, those belong to all Americans. We have a right to beneﬁt from our resources and, whatever position I’m in, that will be my top priority. It’s the simplest, fairest and most productive solution to the jobs and deﬁcit issues we face. AMERICAN GAS: Stepping away from energy for a moment, did your hard-fought and somewhat contentious 2010 campaign for your Senate seat, in which you became the ﬁrst senator in more than 50 years to win a write-in campaign, alter your perspective on the political climate in Washington? What is your prescription for an effective federal government that exhibits real leadership on behalf of the American people? SEN. MURKOWSKI: My prescription for an effective federal government is to remember that we’re all in this together. We have to respect where others are coming from. e energy world is so regional that there’s really no room for partisanship. I think we all recognize that members of Congress have to protect their constituencies.
