A Better Balance CONTINUED FROM PAGE 28 r Don’t Leave You Personal Life Out of Your Schedule Be as diligent with scheduling your personal objectives (exercise, buy Amy’s birthday card, make dinner reservations, call Dad) in your calendar as you are with work commitments. Why do you put business appointments in your calendar? Because they are important, and you don’t want to forget them. e same is true for your personal life. Use a calendar, and remember to carry it with you. Put those personal items on the day you will do them, and look at your calendar every day. William Harvey Patricia Kampling Eric Martuscelli Stay in Balance by e nc Getting Out of Bala Staying in balance is like steering a boat. From my Florida office I can see a lighthouse about two miles out to sea. Imagine you want to steer a small boat from shore to that lighthouse. Grasping the steering wheel tightly, you aim the bow directly at the lighthouse and accelerate toward your destination. If you continue to firmly hold the wheel in the direction you’ve started, without making any adjustment left or right, will you arrive at the lighthouse? No. What happens? Gripping the wheel you quickly find that the lighthouse is off to your left; so you steer left. Within a few minutes the lighthouse is off on the right; so you steer right. You continue this pattern of left-right adjustment until you get to the lighthouse. You stayed on course by getting off course. e same is true in life. You stay in balance by getting out of balance. A life reality is you can’t be all things to all people at the same time. Instead, what you need to be able and willing to do is shift your mental emphasis for a day, a weekend, a week. Choose a person or project that is important to you that you have been neglecting. Make up your mind now to give focused attention to that person or activity for the upcoming week. Schedule specific things: buy my spouse flowers; take my daughter to breakfast; sign up at the gym. Improve your balance by committing in your calendar how you will shift it for the next seven days. Every Day You can create a more positive work-life balance for yourself. Schedule well your business and personal objectives. Be conscious to shift your balance as needed. Stay focused in your people moments. And make sure you achieve and enjoy—every day.
