No need to venture to the corner gas station when
you can fill up in the comfort of your own garage.
Vehicles that run on compressed natural gas benefit from lower emissions and reduced engine wear. But uptake of CNG vehicles has been
hampered by limited refueling infrastructure. Now Chesapeake Energy
is partnering separately with GE and Whirlpool to develop a $500 compressor that will allow consumers to refuel natural gas cars at home. The
product should be available by 2015. The appliance will be installed in
a home garage, connect to the consumer’s natural gas line, and dispense
CNG. Some 65 million American homes are already directly supplied with
natural gas, according to Chesapeake Energy. In the United States, natural
gas currently powers about 112,000 vehicles, mostly delivery trucks
reliant on an infrastructure of 545 fueling stations, according to the U.S.
Department of Energy. “A low-cost home appliance will improve the market
for CNG vehicles,” Norman Herrera, director of market development for
Chesapeake Energy, told American Gas. “Consumers won’t worry about
having a natural gas station on every corner. And automakers will have the
confidence that there will be market for CNG vehicles.” —Eric Schoeniger
