The new models—CNG versions of Ford’s popular F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks— will be available in mid-2013. Westport is one of six qualified CNG engine developers/installers in Ford’s Power of Choice program, which offers customers a variety of fuel system options on select models such as E-Series vans and Transit Connect taxis. Available in mid-2013, the CNG fuel systems for 2013 F-450 and F-550 trucks will be installed at the Westport Kentucky Integration Center in Louisville after the trucks are assembled at a Ford plant across the street. Westport already offers a CNG fuel system for Ford’s lighter-duty F-250 and F-350 trucks. That system is priced at $9,500, according to Westport. Pricing for CNG on Ford’s Super Duty trucks is not yet available. The market for CNG-powered Super Duty trucks includes delivery and utility companies, energy-industry fleets, and government. According to Westport, the new models will save fleets between 25 and 40 percent in fuel costs, with payback in two years. The trucks will be available through Ford dealerships authorized by Westport to sell and service its CNG line. Westport says the new CNG conversions are prompted by the success of the Ford F-250 and F-350 conversions as well as customer requests for more fuel-efficient trucks capable of heavierduty hauling. Other carmakers offering CNG conversion options include General Motors and Chrysler. Honda’s Civic Natural Gas is the only car model currently on the U.S. market with a manufacturer-installed CNG system. —Gary James u p d at e s LNG Pushes Forward New trucks, fueling stations, and export filings L NG activity continues to heat up, with several major developments in recent months. In December, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. finished the first stage in the creation of America’s Natural Gas Highway. Clean Energy now has 70 LNG truck-fueling stations in the ANGH network, which is designed to support long-haul, heavy-duty goods movement along major interstate corridors throughout the United States.
