vehicles by 2014.
Meanwhile, in Arizona, the Phoenix city
council has approved plans to buy 120 buses
that run on CNG. The new buses will carry a
total price tag of $61 million and should arrive
beginning this fall and into the spring of 2014.
A spokesman for the city’s public transit department estimated that the switch to CNG will save
the city $4 million.
And in February, Dallas rolled out the first
of hundreds of new CNG-powered buses. The
Dallas Area Rapid Transit board approved the
purchase of as many as 452 CNG coaches
through 2015—a $210 million contract—and
several of the buses will be introduced each week
as vehicles become available from the manufacturer, North American Bus Industries.
In two other cities—Tampa, Fla., and
Bloomfield, Mich.—CNG also is playing a more
prominent role. Tampa rolled out the first of five
new CNG solid-waste trucks in February, and it
plans to buy five more by 2014 for a projected
savings of $152,000 annually. In Bloomfield, All
American Waste just rolled out its first naturalgas powered truck. Twenty-one more CNG
trucks have been ordered at a cost of about
$315,000 each, part of the company’s plan to
own the largest fleet of trash-collecting trucks in
Michigan. —G.J.
