As the U.s. moves from a coal-heavy transportation fleet to one drawing on natural gas and renewable technologies,
the nation is consuming energy more efficiently and with lower emissions.

While CO2 emissions attributable to natural gas have gone
up since 2009 due to increased
consumption, the rise has been
more than offset by the decrease
in coal-related emissions. From
2007 to 2012, total U.S.
energy-related CO2 emissions
declined 13 percent.

The profound changes wrought by the adoption of sustainable
energy technologies—natural gas, renewables, and
distributed power and storage—have resulted in an aboutface for the country’s emissions trajectory. Energy-related CO2
emissions climbed almost every year between 1990 and
2007 peaking at 6.02 gigatons that year. They have since
,
fallen by an estimated 13 percent. In 2012 they were likely at
their lowest level since 1994.

“CNG vehicles may emit less CO2 per km
than electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in
hybrid vehicles (PHEV), depending on the
fuels used to produce electricity,” the
International Energy Agency wrote in a
recent report, Are We Entering a Golden
Age of Gas? “In 2020, CNG cars are
expected to emit less CO2 per km than
PHEVs in all regions shown [in the chart to
the left], assuming 10% of the vehiclekilometres of PHEVs is electrically driven.”
Under its “GAS” scenario, the IEA
assumes 70 million NGVs in 2020, and
that some governments will act to
encourage the introduction of more NGVs.
