s tat e h o u s e Mahalo for the LNG Natural gas could reduce Hawaiians’ skyhigh electricity bills honolulu— Hawaii residents pay the highest rates in the nation for electricity, according to the Energy Information Administration—2.5 times the national average. But natural gas may soon give Hawaiians a break on their bills, as Hawai’i Gas expects to receive its first container of LNG in the coming months. Anticipating approval from the required state agencies, Hawai’i Gas has secured the equipment necessary for the vaporization of LNG as well as two LNG shipping containers. Once approved, the company plans to deploy up to 20 containers in a continuous cycle of LNG transport from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii. Since 1974, Hawai’i Gas has produced synthetic natural gas (SNG) by converting naphtha into methane. Now, the company intends to ship LNG to Hawaii to lower the LT cost of energy and diversify its fuel supply. In Phase I of the program, Hawai’i Gas will ship LNG from the U.S. mainland in 40-foot mobile containers to provide a backup supply for its utility distribution system. Phase II expands the use of mobile LNG containers to displace larger amounts of feedstock now used to produce SNG and to serve other customers throughout the state. Phase III requires a central terminal facility to accommodate larger shipments of LNG for use on Oahu and distribution to other islands. Hawaii is the most oil-dependent state in the country, relying on foreign oil for about 85 percent of its primary energy needs. In December, state officials concluded that LNG carriers loading from the U.S. West Coast could deliver LNG to Oahu at a cost that is 31 to 47 percent cheaper than oil.
