Saskatchewan is rich in manufacturing expertise and is an attractive location for research,
development, the testing of high-technology, high-quality aerospace and defence products and
systems.
Notable manufacturers with aerospace and defence capabilities in the province include: Calian
Advanced Technologies, Dumur Industries, RMD Engineering Inc., Pro Metal Industries Ltd.,
Vecima Networks, Draganfly Innovations, JNE Welding, EVRAZ, Saskatoon Bag and Case, Standard
Machine, and Xtended Hydraulics. There are also numerous opportunities to do business with
First Nations who have established manufacturing entities and training institutions that supply
products and workers to the aerospace and defence sector.
Other world-class research and development facilities in Saskatchewan include two universities,
Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron and the Prairie Agriculture
Machinery Institute (PAMI).
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer program was developed in Saskatoon by the Saskatchewan
Indian Institute of Technologies and is funded by Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Rockwell Collins, as well
as the federal and provincial governments. This program is building the foundation for a growing
aerospace industry in Saskatchewan. The Commercial Pilot program is a partnership between
Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the Saskatchewan Aviation Council, providing state-of-the-art
training for commercial pilots in Western Canada.
In addition, 15 Wing Moose Jaw (Canadian Forces
Base Moose Jaw) is home to the NATO Flying Training
in Canada (NFTC) program, which provides military
pilot training to Canadian Forces and participating
allied nations. The program is a strategic alliance
between Canada's Department of National Defence
and CAE Inc., and is supported by major aerospace
companies such as Bombardier, CAE, BAE Systems,
Hawker- Beechcraft, Serco Aviation Services and ATCO
Frontec. The Base's location under clear prairie skies
and its proximity to the Rocky Mountains make it ideal
for the NFTC's world-class pilot training.
