MEET THE NEW

Board Members

With the terms of some members ending and others beginning, the makeup of the Board of
Directors changes annually. Outgoing members in 2017 are Paul Kabotie, Sheila Lopez, and Lisa Lone Fight; members whose terms
will continue are Twyla Baker-Demaray, chair; Rick Stephens, vice-chair; Amber Finley, secretary; Bill Black; John B. Herrington; and Michael
Laverdure. Joining the board are Grace Bulltail, Barney Enos, Kristina Halona, Alicia Jacobs, Adrienne Laverdure, and Shaun Tsabetsaye.
GRACE BULLTAIL, a

member of the Crow Tribe
and descendant of the
Mandan, Hidatsa, and
Arikara Tribes of Fort
Berthold, N.D., is a
postdoctoral fellow in the
Departments of Earth
System Science and Civil Engineering at Stanford
University. She completed master's degree
programs at Montana Tech and Columbia
University, and earned her PhD at Cornell
University. A Sequoyah Fellow, Bulltail has been
active in AISES for more than 20 years.

BARNEY ENOS is a

member of the Gila
River Indian Community,
where he serves as an
elected District Four
councilman. He holds an
undergraduate degree in
public health from the
University of Arizona and an advanced degree
in public administration from Arizona State,
and is an independent tribal policy and
business development consultant. His AISES
roots go back to his high school days in
Coolidge, Ariz., in the mid-1990s.

KRISTINA HALONA, Navajo,

ADRIENNE LAVERDURE,

is an aerospace engineer at
Orbital ATK in Chandler,
Ariz. She earned her BS in
aerospace engineering from
Arizona State University
and an MSE in engineering
management from George
Washington University. A Sequoyah Fellow, Halona
has been part of the AISES family since middle
school, when she began participating in science fairs.
She went on to benefit from AISES scholarships,
internships, and leadership opportunities, serving as
a National Student Representative and an active
member and officer in Professional Chapters in the
Bay Area and Tucson and Phoenix, Ariz., where she is
the current vice president.

Turtle Band of Chippewa,
has been a family
physician serving the Lac
du Flambeau Band of Lake
Superior Chippewa in
Wisconsin for nearly two
decades. A Sequoyah
Fellow, she is an alumna of the Indians into
Medicine program at the University of North
Dakota, where she was a member of the College
Chapter in the late 1980s. Her two sons are both
health care professionals, and Laverdure is a
volunteer mentor for students at the Native
American Center for Health Professions at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, where her
daughter is a student.

ALICIA JACOBS, Cherokee,

SHAUN TSABETSAYE, Zuni
Pueblo, is a Sequoyah
Fellow and member of the
Corporate Advisory
Council who has been
involved with AISES since
1994. He holds a BS in
electrical engineering and
has completed substantial work toward an MSE in
semiconductors and electronics manufacturing.
He also holds an executive MBA. Tsabetsaye is
currently applying his 13 years of project
management and engineering experience as a
project manager of tribal renewable energy
development at NextEra Energy Resources.

was the first recipient of
the Tribal Partner Service
Award. Her role as the
Jones-Bowman
Leadership Specialist at
the Ray Kinsland
Leadership Institute, a
department of the Cherokee Boys Club funded by
the Cherokee Preservation Foundation in
Cherokee, N.C., lets her work toward her goal of
building a generation of leaders across Indian
Country. Currently a graduate student in public
affairs, Jacobs is a Sequoyah Fellow who became
involved with AISES eight years ago when her
students began attending AISES events.

Council
of
Elders
INDUCTS NEW MEMBERS
Council of Elders member
Dr. Bret Benally Thompson
spoke of the grounding elders
have given him and of the
responsibility to pay it
forward. "You must go further than we
have before you," he said. "We have not been
good teachers if you do not." New members
welcomed to the Council of Elders at the
2017 conference are Steve and Rose Darden
(middle right) and Norbert Hill Jr. (far right).
