photos and stories in this issue bring back wonderful memories of those busy,
full days in Denver, and we can all relive that excitement in these pages.
From the moving Opening Ceremony where it all began to the inspiring
Closing Anniversary Gala that brought the conference to a fitting close,
attendees had a chance to hear incredible speakers like Hattie Kauffman and
Norbert Hill Jr., learn at an amazing variety of sessions, create a brighter future
at the College and Career Fair, network with new contacts, and socialize with old friends.
One important part of my job at the conference is bringing everyone up to date on exciting
AISES news, like the launch of our two new advisory councils - the Tribal Nations Advisory
Council (TNAC), whose inaugural meeting was held at the conference, and the Canadian
Indigenous Advisory Council (CIAC, pronounced "kayak"), chaired by Jamie Ricci of Engineers
Canada. Both are poised to help AISES broaden our reach and advance our mission.
But of all the amazing things about this milestone National Conference, being together as
an AISES family is probably the most meaningful for me. As our Board of Directors chair, Dr.
Twyla Baker-Demaray, put it, "Here you don't have to walk in two worlds - you can be Native
wherever you go."
And we go. Meeting first-time conference-goers, interacting with students, reconnecting with
old friends, welcoming our sponsors and exhibitors, and taking time to listen to our elders - all
are reminders that there's nothing like AISES and no experience like this one.
As you revisit conference highlights in this issue, we hope you're inspired to be there with us at
the 2018 AISES National Conference. It's not too soon to start planning - we're looking forward
to sharing this amazing experience with you next year in Oklahoma City!
