An important component of each National Conference is the opportunity to learn from other
AISES members as well as representatives from sponsors and exhibitors who share their
expertise. From tracks tailored for pre-college students, educators, and career and professional
development to the numerous sessions in an array of fields, opportunities to connect and learn
are everywhere. Here is a look at just some of them.

BREAKING THE CODE
Led by Carl Gussgard, CIA senior technical
recruiter, and CIA colleagues
Cryptography, a combination of the Greek words kryptos,
meaning "hidden," and grapho, meaning "to write," is used
by many organizations, including the Central Intelligence
Agency, as an essential
component of secure
messaging. During the
session, the CIA team, led by
Carl Gussgard, demonstrated
the principles of basic
cryptography using playing
cards to encrypt and decrypt
short messages. CIA reps
divided attendees by function
- half to encrypt and half to
decrypt - and provided detailed instructions on several
pre-established playing card cipher rules, which were
intended to represent the algorithm that selects/produces a
playing card output, or "cryptographic key." The idea is that
if the algorithm is known to both the message sender and
the message receiver, both should be able to reproduce
identical card outputs. According to Gussgard, the three
principles of cryptography are confidentiality, integrity, and
availability. Using those principles, the algorithm generates
a stream of values that are combined with a plain-text
message (i.e., card selection output) to form an encrypted
message (i.e., cipher). The same algorithm can then be used
with the cipher to "reconstitute" the plain-text message.
Although most teams were unsuccessful in their attempts
to either encode or decipher a three-letter word as part of
the playing card exercise, they likely came away from the
experience with an appreciation for the precision required
to become a cryptographer.
