National Scientific & Health Care Achievement Award
Recipients
During June’s 73rd Scientific Sessions in Chicago, the American Diabetes Association
presented the National Scientific & Health Care Achievement Awards to seven leading
researchers, clinicians, and educators in the field of diabetes.
The Association’s most prestigious award, the Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement, went to Graeme I. Bell, PhD, the Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor of
Medicine and Human Genetics and the director of the Diabetes Research and Training Center at the University of Chicago, and one of the most cited investigators in the

history of diabetes research. Bell presented a unique Banting Lecture titled “Genetics of
Diabetes—A Personal Journey of Discovery.” While retracing his career in the genetics
of diabetes, Bell discussed his landmark work in the family of genes related to maturityonset diabetes of the young (MODY). Bell reviewed how he and his colleagues succeeded in cloning the insulin gene and identified mutations in it, and other genes, that
contribute to the development of monogenic diabetes and its complications. Using
whole genome sequencing and novel experimental models, Bell and his research colleagues continue to search for new diabetes genes in patients with neonatal diabetes and
MODY of unknown causes. Bell emphasized that “genetics is not a cure for diabetes, but
it can lead to better treatment.”
