Arizona Safe at School Victory
On April 11, Arizona Gov. Janice Brewer signed into law House Bill 2042, American
Diabetes Association–sponsored Safe at School legislation. Association Advocates and
volunteers had rallied in support of this important legislation, which allows Arizona
school staff to volunteer to be trained to assist students with diabetes with insulin administration. The measure also allows children to self-manage their diabetes at school if
they are capable of doing so.
The bill was sponsored by state Rep. Heather Carter. Rep. Carter’s committee assignments
include the House Health Committee, which she chairs, and the Education Committee.
“The American Diabetes Association appreciates the support of House Bill 2042’s sponsor, Representative Heather Carter,” said Craig Morgan, advocacy chair for the Association’s Phoenix Community Leadership Board. “Governor Jan Brewer, who signed the
legislation, and all the legislators and organizations that supported the bill have helped
to ensure students with diabetes across Arizona are safe and healthy, and have equal access to educational opportunities.”
An estimated 215,000 children are living with diabetes in the United States. These children have a disease that must be managed 24/7, including during the many hours spent
at school, on field trips, and in extracurricular activities. Every day, students with diabetes are put at serious risk when no one is present at school who can help them with daily
and emergency diabetes care. House Bill 2042 removes this risk by allowing volunteers
in every school in Arizona to be trained to provide the diabetes care that these children
need and deserve.
