award recipients
Eight top researchers, clinicians, and educators in the field of diabetes were recognized
with National Scientific and Health Care Achievement Awards at the American Diabetes
Association's 75th Scientific Sessions.
The Association's highest honor, the Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement, was
bestowed upon Philipp E. Scherer, PhD, Professor and Director of the Touchstone
Diabetes Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Dr. Scherer is known for the discovery of adiponectin and for
defining its physiologic roles. Adipose tissue had previously
been considered simply as a storage depot for triglycerides, but
his studies using cell biological and biochemical approaches, as
well as mouse genetics, revealed that adipose tissue is, in fact,
a highly responsive endocrine organ that plays a crucial role in
metabolism and inflammation. These discoveries, combined
with innovative methods he developed to study the individual
contributions of specific cells to the regulation of metabolism,
have defined Dr. Scherer as one of the most noteworthy and
creative scientists in the field.
In his Banting Lecture, titled "The Multifaceted Roles of Adipose Tissue: Therapeutic
Targets for Diabetes and Beyond," Dr. Scherer detailed the journey of discovery demonstrating that adipose tissue performs an initially protective role, keeping excess lipids
in adipocytes and out of the non-adipocyte tissues, which are not designed to store fat.
An expanded understanding of adipocytes has revealed the fat cell as a key regulator
of metabolism through secretion of adipokines, lipids, and metabolites. Dr. Scherer's
innovative contributions have been described in more than 320 publications, some of
which have been cited more than 1,000 times, and comprise a comprehensive characterization of the integrated physiology of adipose tissue and its important contributions
to metabolism.
Pere Puigserver, PhD, was honored with the Outstanding
Scientific Achievement Award, which recognizes a researcher under the age of 50 years who has made significant
contributions to the field of diabetes research, demonstrating
originality, independence of thought, and substantial impact.
He is a Professor of Cancer Biology at Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute and of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, in
Boston, Mass.
Dr. Puigserver was recognized with this prestigious award for
his contributions identifying the molecular components and
mechanisms involved in nutrient-regulated metabolic processes. In his award lec-
