Three Recipients Selected for the American Diabetes
Association New England Cardiovascular-Metabolic
Fellowship Awards, Supported by a Grant from Pfizer Inc.
The American Diabetes Association recently announced three recipients of the ADA
New England Cardiovascular-Metabolic Fellowship Awards, supported by a grant from
Pfizer Inc. These fellowships, which commenced in September 2017, provide support of
up to $150,000 for up to two years of funding for studies focused on improving our understanding of the pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular disease
(CVD) in people with diabetes in the New England region. In addition to expanding our
understanding of CVD, these awards seek to increase the number of future independent
diabetes researchers exploring treatments and potential cures for diabetes.
The recipients of the awards are:
*

Jun Li, MD, PhD, a fellow in the laboratory of Frank Hu,
MD, PhD, MPH, at the Harvard School of Public Health
in Boston, MA, for her clinical research project titled,
"Mediterranean Diet, Metabolites and Cardiovascular
Disease in Patients With Diabetes"

*

Guoxiao Wang, PhD, a fellow in the laboratory of C.
Ronald Kahn, MD, at the Joslin Diabetes Center in
Boston, MA, for her basic research project titled, "Role
of Protein Malonylation and Succinylation in Regulating
Mitochondria Dunction and Homeostasis"

*

Andrea Sorrentino, PhD, a fellow in the laboratory of
Thomas Michel, MD, PhD, at Brigham and Women's
Hospital in Boston, MA, for his basic research project
titled, "Chemogenetic Regulation of Intracellular H2O2
in Normal and Diabetic Heart"

GENNID Samples Are
Available
The American Diabetes Association
invites researchers interested in
genetic studies of type 2 diabetes to
browse the GENNID Study biorepository hosted by the Coriell Institute
for Medical Research.
The collection features extensive
clinical, epidemiological, and
demographic data, lymphoblastoid
cell lines, and DNA samples representing several racial and ethnic
groups. Samples for use in studies
to identify risk genes for diabetes
or complications of diabetes are
available for purchase.

Call for Nominations for Pathway to Stop Diabetes® Opens January 2018
The call for nominations for Pathway to Stop Diabetes research awards will open in January. Applications are due
July 2, 2018.
Pathway is a bold initiative to radically transform diabetes research. The program invites institutional nominations for
exceptional individuals who have distinguished themselves as promising investigators with a high likelihood of making
seminal contributions in diabetes research. Pathway provides the means to conduct transformative science, including
substantial, flexible financial support; scientific and career mentoring; and networks for collaboration and communication. Nominations of candidates (one per institution allowed each year) in diverse disciplines from medicine, biology, and
chemistry to engineering, mathematics, and physics, and those from minority groups underrepresented in biomedical
and behavioral research, are encouraged.
Initiator Awards support individuals currently in research training positions (with no more than 7 years of training
following their terminal doctoral degree) as they transition to independence.
Accelerator Awards support early-career diabetes investigators proposing innovative and ambitious diabetes-related
research programs.
Visionary Awards support established investigators with a track record of success in another field proposing extremely
innovative projects likely to significantly advance the field of diabetes research.
