The Use of Language in Diabetes Care
and Education: A Consensus Report from
the American Diabetes Association and
the American Association of Diabetes
Educators
Last fall, a task force consisting of representatives from the
American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American
Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) convened to discuss
the use of language in diabetes care and education. The group
recognizes that language has a strong impact on perception, as
well as behavior, and agreed that the literature supports a need
for a "language movement." To this end, the task force created a
set of recommendations for language used by health care professionals and others when discussing diabetes in person and in
writing, whether communicating with people who have diabetes,
colleagues, or the general public. These recommendations, in
addition to research questions related to language and diabetes, appear in an ADA-AADE consensus report released online
simultaneously by Diabetes Care and The Diabetes Educator on
October 17. The report is available at care.diabetesjournals.org/
lookup/doi/10.2337/dci17-0041 and will appear in print in the
December issues of each journal.
