Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Risk of Hypoglycemia: A Diabetes Care
Special Section
Diabetes Care will publish a special section in its December issue
including several articles covering recent progress in continuous
glucose monitoring (CGM) measurements and their interpretation. The section features a scientific statement developed and
published jointly by the European Association for the Study of
Diabetes (EASD) and American Diabetes Association (ADA)
Technology Working Group titled "Improving the Clinical Value
and Utility of CGM Systems: Issues and Recommendations."
The statement reviews clinical evidence regarding the use of
CGM, describes the properties and limitations of available CGM
systems, and addresses some practical issues regarding use and
safety. In addition, the special section includes two consensus statements. In one, experts with a strong interest in type 1
diabetes define measures of glycemic control other than A1C,
including categories of hypoglycemia and proportions of time

in glucose target ranges during CGM, and consider how best to
use patient-reported outcomes in type 1 diabetes. In the other,
an international group of experts reviews current evidence on
how best to use CGM information for improving patient care
and research, including a discussion of the need for standardizing the format in which data are reported using different CGM
systems. Additional related studies and narratives on CGM and
hypoglycemia are also included in this special section of Diabetes
Care. The ADA-EASD scientific statement was released online
simultaneously by Diabetes Care and Diabetologia on October 25,
available at care.diabetesjournals.org/lookup/doi/10.2337/
dci17-0043, and will appear in print in the December issues
of each journal. The complete special section in Diabetes Care
will appear in print in the December issue, available online
November 21 at care.diabetesjournals.org/content/40/12.

Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes-2018
On December 8, 2017, the American Diabetes Association
(ADA) will release Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes-2018.
In this annual supplement to Diabetes Care, ADA publishes
guidelines for screening, diagnosis, and treatment to provide
better health outcomes for children, adults, and older people
with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes and to improve the
prevention and delay of type 2 diabetes. The 2018 recommendations include updates to several key areas, as well as important

changes to the glycemic treatment algorithm. The Standards
supplement will be available online, free to access, at care.
diabetesjournals.org/content/41/Supplement_1 and will be
published in print with the January 2018 issue. An abridged
version of the Standards targeting primary care providers will be
published in Clinical Diabetes. Additional resources, including
the ability to provide comment, will be available at professional.
