Amaranth Diabetes Foundation Announces New
Matching Campaign to Support Diabetes Research
Since 1979, the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation (ADF) has raised more than $15 million
to support American Diabetes Association (ADA)-funded research. The ADF is the
philanthropic arm of the Order of the Amaranth, an international, Masonic-affiliated
organization that focuses on developing moral character through the practice of truth,
faith, wisdom, and charity.
Often, the Order of the Amaranth is referred to as the "Gem" of Masonry because it
allows members to put into practice the principles of Masonry and challenges them to
build on the foundations of fraternal love and service. It is a vehicle for carrying out acts
of friendship, love of humanity, patriotism, and service.

The ADF was founded in 1979 by Honored Lady Marie Waters, Past Supreme Royal
Matron of Connecticut. It was Waters' desire to give members a unifying goal toward
which to focus their efforts. Thus, diabetes became the primary philanthropic project
through which the Order of the Amaranth works for the betterment of humankind.
Supporting the ADF is personal for Sir
Knight George Pavlik, a long-time active
member. Pavlik's daughter Audra was
diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age
of 7 years. Although she received the best
care possible, her condition deteriorated
throughout her college years to the point
at which she needed a kidney transplant.
Pavlik donated one of his kidneys to her on
her 26th birthday, but she died from longterm complications of the disease in 2012,
at the age of 34 years.
"I know the pain of losing a loved one to
this disease," Pavlik said. "I will do what
I can to support medical research so that
someday no other parent will have to suffer
this loss."

Over the years, Pavlik has directed his energy into a variety of leadership positions in
the Order of the Amaranth and focused on raising money to help researchers find a
cure for diabetes. Order of the Amaranth members organize a wide variety of grassroots
fundraising events, such as auctions, golf tournaments, dinner cruises, retail store collections, raffles, baked good and handmade item sales, concerts, and other special events
and contests. Some of the more interesting fundraising events have included kiss-acontinued on page 2
