Research Symposium to Be Held on Epigenetics and Epigenomics
Epigenetics and Epigenomics:
Implications for Diabetes and
Obesity
November 17-19, 2017, Boston, MA
Statement of Need
Diabetes results from a combination of
genetic and environmental factors. A
number of genetic variants associated with
diabetes have been identified through
genome-wide association studies (GWAS),
but these polymorphisms explain only a
fraction of the heritable risk for the disease. Primary environmental risk factors
for developing type 2 diabetes are obesity,
advanced age, and sedentary lifestyle;
however, many people with these risk
factors do not develop diabetes. Recent
research indicates that the complex interaction between genes and environment
may be accomplished, in part, through

epigenetic changes that contribute additional layers of regulation and provide
insight into how genetic information is
interpreted, expressed, and transmitted
to the next generation. This conference
will bring together expertise in genetics,
epigenetics, computation, and physiology
to discuss the current state of understanding of the relationships between genetics,
epigenetics, and environment in diabetes
and further investigate the role of epigenetic factors in regulating metabolism and
increased risk of diabetes and its complications.

Target Audience
This activity is intended for basic scientists
and physician researchers in diabetes, genetics, epigenetics, physiology, complications, cell biology, computational biology,
and clinical and translational researchers

with an interest in the role of epigenetic
regulation in the development and progression of diabetes and its complications.
The symposium will provide excellent
opportunities for information-sharing,
discussion, and collaboration with other
investigators.

Call for Abstracts
The American Diabetes Association will
convene national and global research
experts in the Boston, MA, metropolitan area. Evan D. Rosen, MD, PhD, and
Katalin Susztak, MD, PhD, will co-chair
the symposium. The abstract submission deadline is August 18, 2017. Please
visit professional.diabetes.org/rs for the
abstract form and submission guidelines.

Register for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Symposium
The Education Recognition Program (ERP) will host a diabetes
self-management education and support (DSME/S) recognition
symposium in multiple locations this year. The ERP DSME/S
symposium is an accredited health care provider continuing education program. The program's goal is to increase patient access to
quality, evidence-based, and sustainable DSME/S programs. The
10

1-day program will guide attendees through how to establish and
maintain a DSME/S program that adheres to national standards
for DSME/S. Attendees can earn up to 7.25 CME credits. To learn
more, visit professional.diabetes.org/erp-dsmes-symposiums.
