Diabetes Pro Quarterly - Spring 2017 - 2

Amaranth Diabetes Foundation continued from cover
possum and kiss-a-pig contests, kidnapping a mascot for ransom,
and a men's beauty contest.
"We have a heck of a lot of fun raising money for diabetes research," said Honored Lady Dr. Joan Schwebel, current president
of the ADF Board of Directors. "The amazing thing is that, year
after year, we are able to make a consistent contribution."
During its 2015-2016 fiscal year, the ADF donated an impressive
$542,000, bringing its cumulative giving total to more than $15
million. Throughout the month of June, for the third consecutive
year, ADF will match all donations made to the Association for
diabetes research, up to $350,000.
The ADF constitution requires that 100% of the money it donates
to the Association be used to support research projects and not
go toward any other Association program or initiative. Because
no administrative expenses are withheld, all monies raised are
passed directly to the Association's Research Foundation for
specific research projects and awarded directly as grants to the
researchers. Periodically, the Association presents ADF with
several research projects for consideration, and the ADF Board
of Directors selects three to fund.
"We're so pleased to be able to choose the projects that we
support," Schwebel said. "We select projects to fund that we
think will make the most use of our contribution and will lead to
life-improving scientific discoveries."

Because ADF's 2016 donation was so large, its Board of Directors
was able to fund a fourth project. Now in its second year,
this project is led by Jenny Kanter, PhD, at the University of
Washington in Seattle. Its aim is to determine whether diabetes
and myocardial infarction synergize to accelerate atherosclerosis.
The results of this study may explain why diabetes combined
with atherosclerosis creates an increased risk for myocardial
infarction in people with diabetes. It may also indicate that use of
certain medications to treat atherosclerosis may also reduce the
likelihood of recurrent heart attacks in people with diabetes.
Through the years, ADF has funded dozens of other studies that
have revealed information vital to understanding and eventually
defeating diabetes. Please join ADF in supporting such important research. The need has never been greater. As Pavlik says,
"The rise of diabetes diagnoses is destined to become a medical
tsunami. I call diabetes a 'gateway disease' because it opens the
door to such a wide variety of life-threatening complications."

CALL TO ACTION:
