Diabetes and Aging: A Diabetes Care Collection
Diabetes Care has published a comprehensive collection of articles on diabetes in older adults. The topics range from hospital
management to the safety of specific glucose-lowering therapies
and the potential consequences of overtreatment (i.e., hypoglycemia) in older people with diabetes. The collection also includes
discussions on the importance of addressing cognitive status
in clinical practice, the significant financial burden of treating
diabetes in the elderly, and aspects of the pathophysiology of diabetes in aging that may affect care goals, including appropriate
glycemic targets and strategies to reduce cardiovascular disease
and mortality.
"We as a medical community continue to struggle with how best
to manage diabetes in older adults," wrote Guest Editors Rita
R. Kalyani, MD, MHS, and Sherita H. Golden, MD, MHS, of
Johns Hopkins University and ADA's Chief Scientific, Medical
& Mission Officer and former Diabetes Care Editor-in-Chief
William T. Cefalu, MD, in their introduction to the section.
"In large measure, the difficulty results from having continued
gaps in research that investigates diabetes in older adults, the
age-group with the highest prevalence rates of diabetes and the
fastest growing segment of the population. . . . Older adults with
diabetes are a heterogeneous population ranging from the robust
to the frail and represent unique challenges and considerations
for both the clinician and researcher that will need to be urgently
addressed in the future."
The collection of articles on diabetes and aging appears in the
April issue of Diabetes Care and can be accessed through the
journal's Online Collections page at care.diabetesjournals.org/

New Clinical Diabetes Department: Quality Improvement and Practice Transformation
Initiatives
Clinical Diabetes is launching a new department, "Quality
Improvement Success Stories," developed in collaboration with
the American College of Physicians and the National Diabetes
Education Program. The department will feature articles and
a searchable online collection devoted to quality improvement (QI) and practice transformation initiatives in the area
of diabetes.
"Momentum is clearly building among all stakeholders toward
the achievement of real improvement in the quality of diabetes
care," writes Clinical Diabetes Deputy Editor Doron Schneider,
MD, FACP, in the latest issue of the journal. "We will all soon
have stories to tell about our own QI journey toward better
diabetes care. . . . We encourage all health care professionals
working in diabetes to submit the stories of their QI initiatives
using our new Quality Improvement Success Story template
(http://bit.do/quality_improvement_template)."
Completed templates can be uploaded directly to the journal's
article submission system at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/
clinical-diabetes. Once submitted, each template will be
reviewed for inclusion in the journal's online QI repository.
Selected submissions also will be published in print issues of
Clinical Diabetes.
"We are all on the journey to improve, and as the old adage goes,
'If you would like to travel fast, go alone. But if you would like to
travel far, go with others,'" Schneider wrote. "We look forward
to reading and learning from your submissions so that we can
all travel far-together." To access the latest issue of Clinical
Diabetes, visit clinical.diabetesjournals.org.
Call for Papers for Clinical Diabetes Special Issue on Patient-Centered Diabetes Care
The editors of Clinical Diabetes seek manuscript submissions for
a special issue on patient-centered diabetes care. Submissions
may cover a wide range of topics under the broad general
umbrella of "patient-centered care" and could include research
reports, descriptions of innovative programs or initiatives, review
articles, or commentaries on topics such as treatment adherence,
patient empowerment, advocacy, or patient-provider collaboration-in short, anything that strengthens patient-provider relationships, promotes communication, or facilitates patients' active
involvement in their own care. Articles that report measurable
improvements (e.g., in clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction,
providers' skills, patient-provider relationships, or system-level
barriers) are of particular interest. Submit online by June 15,
2017, at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/clinical-diabetes.

may include stand-alone articles ("Feature Articles") or articles
tailored for any of the following journal departments: Guest
Editorials, Translating Research to Practice, Practical Pointers,
or Case Studies. Please state in your cover letter which type of
article you are submitting and follow the format and submission
guidelines available in the Information for Authors at clinical.
diabetesjournals.org.
All submissions will be considered for publication in Clinical
Diabetes even if they are not selected for inclusion in the
