Diabetes Pro Quarterly - Spring 2017 - 8

PROFESSIONAL NEWS
Diabetes Innovation continued from page 7
ecosystem of disruptive technologies. We're seeing real opportunity
for collaboration. And so, all of the sudden, we're going to really accelerate, and we're going to outpace the ability of the regulatory agencies
to get comfortable with these disruptive, alternative ways of operating.
So, I think we've really got to collaborate with them.
Hutton: This is one place where the FDA fits in. There is a lot of
confusion around FDA approvals, particularly when technologists in
Silicon Valley are trying to bring known techniques and technologies
to problems such as diabetes, and they think, why don't patients just
show them their data? And why can't we just have patients opt in from
their glucose meters, and we'd be up and running? We really have to
distinguish what's a drug, a drug delivery device, a medical device
with medical information that's highly regulated, and then what are
strictly coaching, encouragement, and fitness apps. It's critical that
we continue to work toward having mobile devices be the hub for
both patients and physicians. But, right now, phones are not regulated
devices, so they can't always communicate with other siloed devices
such as a pump or a drug delivery cell.
I think a lot of smart people are wrapping their minds around that
right now, and I think the FDA is doing well in facilitating that
dialogue, but it is not for the faint of heart. And, I think there are
many from the tech side who have underestimated the challenge.
Small companies have to figure out how to navigate all of that before
they lose their shirts just getting through the regulatory and clinical
process.

of behavior change, first-person perspectives, and what innovators are
doing to lead effective solutions that transform the lives of people living
with diabetes.
