Inaugural Women's
Interprofessional Network
Reception Held at
Scientific Sessions

Friday, June 9, 2017, marked the
inaugural convening of the Women's
Interprofessional Network of the
American Diabetes Association (WIN
ADA). The event included nearly 100 female diabetes researchers, clinicians, and
educators from more than 20 states and
multiple countries. Reception attendees
with various backgrounds, including adult
and pediatric endocrinology, reproductive
health, epidemiology, and psychology and
behavioral health, came together during
the 77th Scientific Sessions to learn more
about the initiative, share their ideas, and
expand their networks.
Although the details of how WIN ADA
will be organized and supported are still
being worked out, its goals are clear: to
strengthen the female presence in diabetes care and research; to recognize women who make notable contributions to the
field; and to build a communication and
support network for female researchers,
clinicians, and educators to enhance their
work and career growth.

Primary care providers from around the world attended the Diabetes Is Primary
program, offered as a Scientific Sessions preconference on Friday, June 9. This year's
program featured new information on diabetes treatment options, psychosocial
care, and hypoglycemia.
"Diabetes Is Primary focuses on the primary care providers who are in the trenches, day after day, treating people with diabetes," said program chair Jay Shubrook,
DO, Professor, Primary Care Department, Touro University California College of
Osteopathic Medicine. "The goal is to provide a relevant overview of diabetes care
that can have a meaningful impact in primary care."
More than 150 attendees learned from leading experts about updates to the
Association's Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, prediabetes, MACRA (the
Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015), caring for Latino
populations, injectable therapies, and exercise and diabetes. The program featured
iPad technology to enhance interaction between speakers and attendees, as well as
breakout sessions to enable small-group discussions.
"We heard from attendees over and over again that the program was very practical, which is our goal," said program vice-chair Eric Johnson, MD, Associate
Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of North
Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences. "And we know that we can't deliver
this practical information to all of primary care in a live session, so we provide
webcasts, free of charge, on the website. Last year's program distributed more than
10,000 continuing education certificates online, extending the reach of Diabetes Is
Primary and sharing this information with other clinicians around the country."
Diabetes Is Primary is developed under the guidance of the Association's Primary
Care Advisory Group, which includes, in addition to Drs. Shubrook and Johnson,
John Anderson, MD, Amy Butts, PA-C, MPAS, CDE, James Chamberlain, MD,
CDR, Billy St. John Collins, DHSc, PA-C, Hope Feldman, CRNP, FNP-BC, Sandra
Leal, PharmD, MPH, FAPhA, CDE, Tyree Morrison, CRNP, CDE, BC-ADM,
Andrew S. Rhinehart, MD, FACP, FACE, and Neil Skolnik, MD.
