a first-of-its-kind mouse metabolic phenotyping core. These
programs and resources have expanded the reach of diabetes
research and care around the world.
William V. Tamborlane, MD, was
the recipient of the Outstanding
Achievement in Clinical Diabetes
Research Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions in patientoriented clinical outcomes research that
have had a significant impact on diabetes prevention and treatment.
Dr. Tamborlane is a professor and chief
of pediatric endocrinology at Yale
University and deputy director of the Yale Center for Clinical
Investigation in New Haven, Conn. Dr. Tamborlane is renowned
for patient-oriented research. Employing a wide range of innovative and sophisticated techniques, his efforts have advanced
clinical trial methodologies, behavioral interventions, and epidemiologic cohort studies in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Among Dr. Tamborlane's major accomplishments are pioneering
studies in the development of insulin pump therapy; demonstration that intensive diabetes treatment impairs counterregulatory
responses to hypoglycemia; the development of novel behavioral
interventions to improve outcomes for adolescents with type 1
diabetes; and the development of the first registry of youth with
type 2 diabetes in the United States.
Dr. Tamborlane has held leadership roles in several multicenter
diabetes trials and studies, including the Diabetes Control and
Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions
and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) study, the Treatment Options
for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) study,
JDRF's Continuous Glucose Monitoring Study Group, the
Pediatric Diabetes Consortium T2D Clinical Trials Network, and
the Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative
Effectiveness study. With more than 850 publications and a
demonstrated commitment to mentoring students, fellows, and
junior faculty, Dr. Tamborlane continues to shape an outstanding
legacy in clinical diabetes investigation.
The Outstanding Physician Clinician
in Diabetes Award was presented to
Ruth S. Weinstock, MD, PhD (shown
on left), a distinguished service professor and division chief of endocrinology,
diabetes and metabolism at the State
University of New York (SUNY) Upstate
Medical University and medical director
of the Joslin Diabetes Center and the
Clinical Research Unit at SUNY Upstate
in Syracuse. This award was presented in recognition of her exceptional clinical knowledge and expertise in the care of patients
with diabetes.

Dr. Weinstock has been actively involved in clinical care, teaching, and research for more than 30 years. She leads an effective
staff of endocrinologists, educators, and other professionals to
provide the best possible care and advocacy for people with diabetes and their families. Dr. Weinstock is particularly committed
to reaching underserved and needy patients. She was the driving
force behind the establishment of the Joslin Diabetes Center at
SUNY Upstate, the only comprehensive, multidisciplinary diabetes center serving adults and children in central New York.
With an extensive publication history, Dr. Weinstock has assumed essential roles in several national collaborative research
projects, including the TODAY study, the T1D Exchange studies,
and the Informatics for Diabetes Education and Telemedicine
(IDEATel) demonstration project. She has trained and mentored
hundreds of students, residents, and fellows, inspiring many to
pursue diabetes research and practice in their careers.
This year's Outstanding
Educator in Diabetes Award
recognized Davida F. Kruger,
MSN, APRN-BC, BC-ADM.
The award acknowledges a
distinguished health professional who has made outstanding
educational efforts in the field of diabetes and has demonstrated significant contributions to the understanding of diabetes
education. A certified nurse practitioner in diabetes research and
clinical practice at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich.,
Ms. Kruger was recognized for more than three decades of pivotal contributions to diabetes research, care, and education.
Her contributions to diabetes research are featured in more than
80 publications. Notably, she led the trial coordinators' group
for the DCCT, successfully implementing the trial at sites across
the United States. With a passion for people with diabetes and
those who care for them, Ms. Kruger has been a leader not only
in patient care and education, but also in the education of health
care providers, endocrine fellows, and researchers.
Ms. Kruger's commitment to diabetes is further evidenced
by her volunteer leadership roles for the American Diabetes
Association, including past-President for Health Care and
Education, past-chair of the Research Foundation, and completed terms of service as editor-in-chief of Diabetes Spectrum and
Clinical Diabetes.
The Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International
Service in the Cause of Diabetes was presented to Roger S.
Mazze, PhD. This award honors individual outstanding service
in the cause of diabetes that has been performed with an international perspective and with international impact. Dr. Mazze
is past head of the World Health Organization Collaborating
Center (a joint program of the International Diabetes Center and
