2017 National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American
Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) have jointly
published updated National Standards for Diabetes SelfManagement Education and Support (DSMES Standards). In
2016, ADA and AADE together created a task force, including experts from numerous health care professions, as well as
individuals with diabetes. The task force reviewed the current
DSMES Standards for appropriateness, relevance, and scientific
basis and made updates based on evidence and expert consensus.
The revision includes 10 national standards covering internal

structure, stakeholder input, population evaluation, oversight,
facilitation, curriculum, individualization, ongoing support, participant progress, and quality improvement. It also emphasizes a
focus on the individual with diabetes as the center of the diabetes
care team. The DSMES Standards are used in the field for recognition by ADA and accreditation by AADE and are intended to
serve as a guide for all providers of diabetes education. The latest
DSMES Standards were jointly published online ahead of print
by Diabetes Care and The Diabetes Educator in July.

Diabetes and Hypertension: A Position Statement by the American Diabetes Association
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) will soon publish an updated position statement on the assessment and
treatment of hypertension for people with diabetes. The new
statement includes advances in care since the last ADA diabetes and hypertension position statement was published in
2003. The updated recommendations reflect robust literature
demonstrating the clinical efficacy of lowering blood pressure,
with cardiovascular and microvascular benefits demonstrated

for multiple classes of antihypertensive medications. Future
updates to these and other recommendations will be published
in the annual ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes as
more evidence becomes available to guide the assessment and
treatment of hypertension among people with diabetes. The new
position statement is scheduled to be published in the September
issue of Diabetes Care, available online August 22, 2017 at
care.diabetesjournals.org.

Enhancements for ADA Journals: Altmetric and ReadCube Discover
The American Diabetes Association (ADA), in partnership with
DigitalScience, has implemented two enhancements for ADA
journals online-Altmetric and ReadCube Discover. Altmetric
showcases the rich online engagement of ADA's four scholarly
journals. In addition to traditional usage statistics, articles published since June 2017 now include a colorful Altmetric badge.
Clicking on the badge provides access to mentions of the article
online from various sources, including newspapers, magazines,
blogs, social media, and policy documents, as well as comments
on postpublication peer-review sites. In addition, readers may
sign up to receive e-mail alerts when new mentions become
available online.

As a ReadCube Discover partner, ADA's scholarly journal
collection has been deep-indexed for enhanced searchability
across ReadCube's web, desktop, and mobile apps. Articles from
Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Clinical Diabetes, and Diabetes Spectrum
can be quickly located using robust search tools, a recommendation engine, and related-article feeds. In addition, any ADA
article viewed within ReadCube is available in an enhanced PDF
format, with features such as annotation tools, hyperlinked inline citations, quick access to supplemental materials, clickable
author names, a high-resolution figure browser, and article metrics. More information about Altmetric and ReadCube Discover
is available at digital-science.com.

American Diabetes Association Updates Scholarly Journals Policy
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has updated its
scholarly journal policies to address preprint servers and
scholarly research collaboration networks. The policy regarding
originality and prior publication has been revised to clarify that
posting a manuscript on a preprint server before peer-review
submission does not constitute prior publication-ADA journals
will consider manuscripts for publication if they have been previously posted on a not-for-profit, subject-based preprint server
or repository.
The policy regarding article sharing and access has been revised
to permit the posting of submitted or accepted manuscripts in

not-for-profit subject-based preprint servers and on scholarly
collaboration networks that subscribe to the STM Association's
"Voluntary Principles for Article Sharing on Scholarly
Collaboration Networks" (available at stm-assoc.org/stmconsultations/scn-consultation-2015, accessed May 19, 2017).

Procedures" page for ADA journals at diabetesjournals.org/
