Diabetes Makes the Top 10 in Denver Innovation Challenge

The American Diabetes Association is excited to announce
that diabetes has been revealed as one of 10 "wicked problems"
at the annual 10.10.10 meeting in Denver, Colo. (101010.net).
10.10.10 brings together 10 chief executive officers (CEOs; serial
entrepreneurs) for 10 days to explore technology-based solutions
for 10 designated wicked problems. Each CEO chooses one of
the problems and moves with a dedicated expert technology
team through an intense solution discovery phase based on
Google's design sprint, a process for answering critical business
questions. The veil on this year's wicked problems was lifted at
a "Big Reveal" public event on June 5, 2017, and participation
in 10.10.10 offers a unique and exciting opportunity for the
Association to play a stronger role in the diabetes technology
ecosystem and start-up space.
At the start of the meeting, the following 10 wicked
problems were presented:

*

Self-determination in wellness/health literacy: a virtual
coaching platform for providers to use that integrates data
from various sources

*

Food insecurity: the development of an ecosystem to bring
more choices to inner-city residents, rather than expecting
them to commute to other areas to access food

*

Heath literacy: an interactive communication tool between
providers and patients to help improve communication,
understanding, and education in the care process

*

Toxic stress: a monitoring device for cortisol to create a
stress vital sign that makes this internal, invisible process
visible to patients and their physicians

The CEOs are continuing their work to further develop these
tools and build prototypes. The Association will stay appraised of
their work and host videos and other materials at adainnovation.
org as solutions come to life.

1.

Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. In the United States alone,
30.3 million people have type 2 diabetes, and 84.1 million
people have prediabetes.

2.

Toxic stress. Just four incidences of toxic stress can shorten
life expectancy by 10 years.

3.

Childcare accessibility. Access to affordable childcare is the
biggest drag on productivity.

4.

Affordable housing. High housing costs are now affecting
middle-income families, not just low-income households.

5.

Food insecurity. Reliable access to food is a problem for
millions of Americans, even those above the poverty level.

6.

Aligning incentives to value. Our health care system provides value and incentives to industries related to health,
but not necessarily to public health.

Innovators and entrepreneurs are invited to compete in
the American Diabetes Association's Venture Challenge.
Submission of new technologies and strategies designed to
improve health and wellness in the diabetes community are
encouraged. Finalists will be granted the opportunity for
mentorship and an introduction to Association partners
following a final pitch competition in November at mHub
in Chicago, Ill. The winner will be granted public alignment
with the Venture Challenge and use of its logo.

7.

Implementation science. Huge incentives exist for conducting new science, but far less for applying science to practice.

8.

Mental health. The cost of mental disease worldwide is
expected to grow from $2.5 trillion in 2010 to $6 trillion
by 2030.

Submissions will be accepted until October 2, 2017, at
adainnovation.org/challenge.

9.

Health literacy. Lack of access to accurate, reliable information about health affects both consumers' ability to make
informed health decisions and outcomes.

10. Self-determination in wellness. Research on behavioral
psychology can inform the development of more effective,
sustainable wellness solutions.
The CEOs were then provided with repositories of data and insights from subject matter experts and their representative organizations. Sonja Baro, the Association's Regional Vice President
for the Mountain Region, represented the Association at the
meeting and spent time with the CEOs to help them frame the
issues surrounding diabetes management and care. Throughout
these discussions, the CEOs quickly realized that social determi6

nants of health are key to understanding the diabetes "problem,"
which led them to ultimately integrate diabetes with the other
issues being addressed. The following tools are currently being
explored in relation to diabetes:
