Statement of Need

2:00-4:45 p.m.

Session I: Epigenomics to understand GWAS

Diabetes results from a combination
of genetic and environmental factors.
A number of genetic variants associated with diabetes have been identified
through genome-wide association studies
(GWAS), but these polymorphisms
explain only a fraction of the heritable
risk for the disease. Primary environmental risk factors for developing type 2
diabetes are obesity, advanced age, and
sedentary lifestyle; however, many people
with these risk factors do not develop
diabetes. Recent research indicates that
the complex interaction between genes
and environment may, in part, be accomplished through epigenetic changes that
contribute additional layers of regulation. This research provides insight into
how genetic information is interpreted,
expressed, and transmitted to the next
generation. This conference will bring together expertise in genetics, epigenetics,
computation, and physiology to discuss
the current state of understanding of the
relationships between genetics, epigenetics, and environment in regulating
metabolism and the risk of diabetes and
its complications.

participation from symposium attendees to provide input during this session.
Registration is open now! Visit professional.diabetes.org/rs to view the program
and register.

Target Audience
This activity is intended for basic scientists and physician researchers in
diabetes, genetics, epigenetics, physiology, complications, cell biology, and computational biology, as well as clinical and
translational researchers with an interest
in the role of epigenetic regulation in the
development and progression of diabetes
and its complications. The symposium
will provide excellent opportunities for
information-sharing, discussion, and
collaboration with other investigators.

Save the Date! Don't Miss Important Advances in
Diabetes Treatment!
Registration Opens in October 2017
Join your colleagues and diabetes experts to learn about cutting-edge clinical research on
diabetes. The course will cover clinical research translated into evidence-based treatment
strategies to improve outcomes in your patients with diabetes. Discuss clinical cases with
the world-renowned faculty, and take home practical patient management tools to start
using right away in your practice.
