Maureen Gannon, PhD, grew
up in Queens, NY. She earned a
bachelor's degree in biology from
Molloy College in Rockville Centre,
NY, and a master's degree in biology
from Adelphi University in Garden
City, NY. She completed her doctorate in cell biology and anatomy at Cornell University in
Ithaca, NY. Her thesis project, conducted in the laboratory
of Dr. David Bader, examined cardiac organogenesis and
the formation of the chambers of the heart in the
developing embryo.
Dr. Gannon pursued her postdoctoral training in the
laboratory of Dr. Chris Wright at Vanderbilt University
in Nashville, TN, where she studied genes that regulate embryonic pancreas development and expression
of the insulin gene. In 2001, she joined the faculty at
Vanderbilt, where she is now a professor and vice chair
for faculty development in the Department of Medicine,
with secondary appointments in the Departments
of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics and Cell &
Developmental Biology.
The research in Dr. Gannon's laboratory focuses on the
function and regeneration of insulin-producing β-cells
and has implications for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. She
has received research grants from the National Institutes
of Health, the JDRF, the American Diabetes Association,
and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and has
presented her research at conferences in the United States,
Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Dr. Gannon lives in Nashville with her husband and son.
In her spare time, she performs Celtic singing and Irish
step dancing and has appeared on stage at Nashville's
Ryman Auditorium with The Chieftains, at the Grand Old
Opry, and at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in
Nashville. She also sings in her church music group and
volunteers with her son's Boy Scout troop.
David Alper, DPM, is a private
practice podiatrist in Belmont, MA,
where he focuses on the prevention
and treatment of diabetes-related
foot conditions. A member of the
American Diabetes Association's
(ADA's) newly formed Membership
Advisory Group, he has also served the ADA in various
capacities for more than 30 years at the state, regional,
and national levels, including as chair of several Diabetes
EXPOs. He is current president of the ADA New England
Leadership Board and co-chair of the Massachusetts ADA
Advocacy Committee and is a member of the national
Legislative and Regulatory Subcommittee.
Dr. Alper has a long history of involvement in public
health and professional initiatives. He was recently
elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Podiatric
Medical Association and has just finished his tenth 3-year
elected term as a member of the Town of Belmont's
Board of Health. He has also been appointed by the
Massachusetts governor to serve on several state
commissions on diabetes.
He currently lives in Belmont with his wife and three
college-aged children.
