Focus on Fellows Celebrates 5th Anniversary CE Opportunities continued from page 7
Focus on Fellows, the American Diabetes Association's (ADA's)
early career program, will celebrate its fifth anniversary at this
year's Scientific Sessions. This Scientific Sessions pre-conference
encourages fellows to remain in the diabetes field by providing
career development and networking opportunities.
Since its inception, Focus on Fellows has reached more than 550
early career fellows. This year, 150 people will attend the 2-day
meeting, which will feature sessions on diabetes research and
clinical care. More than 180 people applied for this program,
which also will provide small-group ask-the-expert lunches
and personalized technology tours of the Scientific Sessions
exhibit hall.
"Focus on Fellows is at the heart of ADA's mission because of the
way it fosters learning and interaction with leading experts in
diabetes research and care," said Robert Eckel, MD, a planning
committee member and Professor of Medicine in the Division of
Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, and Cardiology at the
University of Colorado School of Medicine. "This is one way the
ADA is addressing the current and future demand for endocrinologists focusing on diabetes."
This year's program will
feature more breakout
sessions that focus on
different career paths
such as clinical practice,
research, quality improvement, and industry.
"We heard from previous
attendees that they wanted smaller-group learning opportunities to ask specific questions
about various career paths," said Meltem Zeytinoglu, MD, MBA,
another planning committee member and an Assistant Professor
of Medicine at the University of Chicago. "When I attended
Focus on Fellows, I was impressed with how the program opened
my eyes to all the possibilities that were available to me as both a
diabetes clinician and future researcher. While I got to meet both
faculty and industry experts, the program also provided a unique
opportunity to meet with fellows from around the country
interested in different pathways. The onsite support also helped
me navigate the very intimidating Scientific Sessions program."
To measure the program's goal of encouraging early-career
endocrinologists stay in diabetes, ADA will conduct a 5-year
post-event outcomes survey to first-year attendees. "We'll use
this data to help with future program development," Eckel said.
Focus on Fellows was developed by the ADA Early Career
Advisory Group, a consortium of endocrinologists from various
backgrounds. In addition to Drs. Eckel and Zeytinoglu, the
group includes Robert Gabbay, MD, PhD, FACP, Joslin Diabetes
Center; Michael Haller, MD, University of Florida; Ildiko Lingvay,
MD, UT Southwestern Medical Center; Kieren J. Mather, MD,
Indiana University Health; and Jane E. B. Reusch, MD, University
of Colorado.

Scientific Sessions Pre-conference on Continuous
Glucose Monitoring
The ADA is pleased to present a pre-conference symposium
at the 78th Scientific Sessions titled "The Role of Continuous
Glucose Monitoring in Diabetes Treatment." In this 3-hour
accredited activity, leading continuous glucose monitoring
(CGM) experts will address key learnings gleaned from CGM to
date; appropriate candidates and clinical situations in which this
technology may be particularly helpful; practical consideration
for implementing CGM in the clinical setting; and best practices
for interpreting and acting on CGM data to improve diabetes
management and outcomes.
This activity includes admission, breakfast, continuing education
credits, course materials, and provider/patient education materials. Admission is free, but registration is required and limited.
Registration for this CGM session is only open to Scientific
