Primary Care Preconference Scheduled for 2018
Scientific Sessions
The American Diabetes
Association's Diabetes Is Primary
program will take place on
Friday, June 22, 2018, in advance
of the 78th Scientific Sessions in
Orlando, FL. This interactive educational initiative, developed specifically for the primary care community, will offer information needed to improve patient outcomes and
enhance patient engagement.
"There are quite a few new developments in diabetes care that have happened in the last year," said
Eric L. Johnson, MD, chair of the Association's
Primary Care Advisory Group. "Diabetes Is
Primary will highlight the most important updates
in diabetes treatment options and diabetes-related
technologies, to name just two."
A panel discussion will allow several experts to weigh in on new Association guidelines
on cardiovascular risk and related treatment options and how these guidelines affect
primary care. Other presentations will include updates to the Standards of Medical Care
in Diabetes-2018, psychosocial care, prediabetes, diabetic kidney disease, and obesity
management. Attendees will participate in smaller group breakout sessions and a Meet
the Speaker Q&A session at the end of the program. Diabetes Is Primary will offer up to
six continuing education credits.
All presentations will be delivered in an interactive format. Attendees will be able to
follow along on tablets, weigh in on case studies, and access additional resources online.
"It can be challenging to keep up with the rapid pace of improvements in diabetes care,"
Johnson said. "We hope clinicians leave Diabetes Is Primary with the confidence to
incorporate these latest updates into their daily practice."
The $100 registration fee includes admission, continuing education credits, course materials, and lunch. Scientific Sessions attendees can sign up for the Diabetes Is Primary
preconference during the online Scientific Sessions registration process. Clinicians not
attending the Scientific Sessions can register at professional.diabetes.org/primary.

Expanding the View in Florida
The American Diabetes Association's 33rd annual
Clinical Conference on Diabetes will take place
Friday, May 24-27, 2018, in Naples, FL. This
popular program will bring together experts
and attendees from around the country to the
beautiful setting of the Naples Grande Hotel.
"Clinical Conference focuses on the entire team
from across the health care spectrum," conference
co-chair Dr. John Anderson said. "Experts will
translate the latest research into practical implications for clinical care."
The program starts on Thursday with intensive
workshops focusing on technology and diabetes education. Participants will be able to select
various tracks and workshops throughout the
weekend that focus on topics such as cardiovascular disease, health disparities, and behavioral
issues.
Clinical Conference is designed for primary care
physicians, physician's assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, psychologists,
dietitians, certified diabetes educators, and other
health care professionals who care for patients
with diabetes, at risk for diabetes, or managing
diabetes-related complications. Participants can
earn up to 20.5 continuing education credits.
Conference co-chair Dr. Holly Divine has been
instrumental in expanding the reach of Clinical
Conference to pharmacists, nurse practitioners,
and other members of the diabetes care team.
"Comprehensive care of patients with diabetes
requires a team of health care professionals to ensure that all the patient's needs are cared for and
addressed. Our goal is to provide an educational
activity relevant to the entire diabetes care team,"
she said.
"Clinical Conference provides attendees a great
opportunity to dive deeper into real-world issues
that clinicians face each day," Dr. Anderson said.
"The goal is to expand the view of diabetes care
so patients can receive individualized treatment
delivered with a holistic approach."
Early-bird registration ends March 21, and the
deadline to register online is May 20. For more
information, visit professional.diabetes.org/CC.
