The American Diabetes Association's (ADA's)
Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes (Standards of
Care) provides the latest in comprehensive, evidencebased recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of children and adults with type 1 diabetes, type
2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes mellitus; strategies
to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes; and therapeutic
approaches to reduce complications and positively
affect health outcomes. The Standards of Care is
published annually and is now available online at
professional.diabetes.org/standards.

What's New for 2019
A focus on individualized care, with a new patient-centered care decision cycle and new,
more detailed treatment algorithms to guide care providers through the many patient
factors, is one of the most important updates to the Standards of Care for 2019. The
patient-centered care decision cycle represents the vast knowledge we have garnered
across the research spectrum. Diabetes is a complex and progressive disease, and
diabetes requires 24/7 care and monitoring. People living with the disease are their own
primary caregiver. Therefore, we must consider each individual's complete health status,
as well as life circumstances, psychosocial issues, and financial circumstances, in developing a diabetes treatment plan.
With more treatment algorithms that provide decision support for individualized care,
the 2019 Standards of Care creates a roadmap for therapeutic approaches and medication selection based on each patient's overall health status. Patient factors, including
presence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), risk of hypoglycemia, need
to minimize weight gain, cost concerns, and need to simplify complex insulin therapy,
are now part of the treatment decision pathways included in the Standards of Care to
help guide treatment.
Other key updates to the 2019 Standards of Care include revisions to cardiovascular recommendations, which have been endorsed for the first time by the American College of
Cardiology (ACC). These recommendations aim to reduce heart attacks, strokes, heart
failure, and other manifestations of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading
cause of death and disability for people with diabetes. Also, diabetes technology is now
more thoroughly discussed in its own section, which includes new recommendations
on insulin delivery, blood glucose meters, continuous glucose monitors, and automated
insulin delivery devices.
