MISSION NEWS
Count Me In: November Is American Diabetes Month
We put a lot of stock in numbers, from
the restaurant takeout counter, to the
convenience store checkout counter, to
just taking count. It's called doing things
"by the numbers" for a reason-because
math doesn't lie. So, here is a number to
think about. Nearly 50% of American
adults have diabetes or prediabetes. That
is a number we simply cannot ignore.
Diabetes will keep affecting us all unless
we do something about it. You can count
on that.
But what if we told you that numbers
make all the difference when it comes to
stopping this disease? From the number
of advocates fighting for those living
with diabetes to the number of research
breakthroughs accomplished toward
finding a cure, from the number of people who know their risk, to the number
on a blood glucose meter, numbers can
change everything. If we ignore these
numbers too long, they start affecting
other numbers-even the number that
matters the most: the number of days we
have left. But these numbers also allow
us to face the threat head on and to let go
of "what ifs" and plant our feet firmly in
the reality of what's next, because these
are numbers you can change.
This month, the American Diabetes
Association marks American Diabetes
Month with Count Me In, a campaign
challenging you to help us change the
numbers that will make a difference by
sharing the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test
with your at-risk patients and diabetes
management tips.
Together, we can change the numbers
of people affected by diabetes. Can we
count you in?
Who?
With more than 115 million Americans
living with or at risk for diabetes, we
believe everyone has a connection to
diabetes, whether they know it or not.
When?
Count Me In launched on November 1,
2019 and continues throughout the month.
What?
With your help, we can reach millions
of people through this campaign.
Through our weekly messaging themes
(Awareness, Empowerment, Know the
Risks, and Get Involved) we are urging
individuals to get tested and find out if
they are at risk for diabetes. We are also
continuing to find ways to increase funding for research that will lead us closer
to a cure and to multiply the number of
voices driving change through advocacy.
How?
* You can get involved by: Joining us in
partnership
* Engaging through owned channels
(e.g., email, social media accounts,
Internet sites, and blogs) using
#CountMeInADA
* Raising your voice by becoming an
advocate
* Volunteering
Why?
The numbers of people with or at risk for
diabetes are numbers we can change, and
that changes everything. You can count
on it.
