MISSION NEWS

Expert Series Focuses on Diabetes and Heart Disease
Encourage your patients to know their risk for heart disease and learn about the connection
between type 2 diabetes and heart health through the American Diabetes Association's (ADA's)
Ask the Experts Q&A series. Participants ask questions of ADA's diabetes experts and learn how
their lifestyle habits affect their heart, blood vessels, and blood glucose.
The next event, A Little Movement Can Go a Long Way, scheduled for December 10, will offer participants practical tips for incorporating exercise into their daily routines. This live event is available online or on the phone. Monthly events start at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time
and last for about 1 hour.
The Ask the Experts Q&A Series is part of the Know Diabetes by Heart collaboration between ADA and the American Heart Association.
Share this information with people affected by type 2 diabetes. Advance registration is free at diabetes.org/experts4Pro, or patients can
call 1-855-531-1065 at the time of the event to be directly connected.

"Ask the Experts: It's Personal" Podcast Available
Encourage your patients to listen in to "Ask the Experts: It's
Personal," a Q&A podcast series featuring real questions from
people with type 2 diabetes and answers from diabetes experts.
Your patients can learn practical tips on topics such as nutrition,
medication management, and physical activity.

RESEARCH NEWS

Association Holds Research Symposium on Precision Medicine in Diabetes
Last month, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) convened a group of basic scientists, clinical researchers, industry representatives,
implementation scientists, diabetes thought leaders, patients, and regulatory scientists at a research symposium in Madrid, Spain. The
symposium, held in conjunction with the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), focused on the future of precision medicine in diabetes. As part of the ADA's new Precision Medicine in Diabetes initiative, this scientific meeting was designed to engage diverse
stakeholders in incorporating and building the evidence base for the adoption of a precision medicine approach to diabetes to achieve
quantifiable, implementable, probabilistic outcomes based on etiology, diagnostics, and therapeutics. The ultimate goals of the initiative
are to better predict who is at risk for diabetes, determine how best to diagnose for treatment, and identify ways to improve treatment
outcomes and reduce the risk of diabetes complications.
The symposium provided excellent opportunities for sharing and discussing information to accelerate guidance on two priority topics:
precision diagnosis and precision therapeutics. Attendees participated in two roundtable discussions identifying knowledge gaps, implementation challenges, and future priorities to ensure the advancement of these two goals. Presentations and participant discussions
during the symposium focused on the need for better defining population-specific rates of the different forms of diabetes and differences in disease presentation. These discussions informed the development of a consensus statement regarding the progress of precision
diabetes medicine, to be published in the near future.
Based on discussions at the meeting, working groups will be formed to further explore the knowledge base regarding which tests
provide the greatest accuracy in diagnosis, which in turn can lead to improved clinical management. In addition, a working group will
focus on the evidence supporting treatment responses in all forms of diabetes, recognizing the global variation in genetic and environmental risk and including differences in types of diabetes around the world.
