Interactive Workshops Address Roots of Therapeutic Inertia
Therapeutic inertia continues to be a major barrier to improving patient outcomes. This
fall the American Diabetes Association (ADA) began holding interactive workshops for
clinicians that address the patient-, clinician-, and health care system-related barriers to
advancing or deintensifying diabetes therapy and highlight possible solutions.
The first program took place on October 17 in Los Angeles, CA. More than 100 clinicians attended the program, which included small-group discussions, real-world case
studies, and opportunities for participants to share ideas.
"These workshops are about solutions, discussion, sharing ideas, and ultimately, about
our patients," keynote speaker Stephen Brunton, MD, said. "We're not here to finger-point or blame. The goals are to identify challenges and understand how we can
improve our practice to reduce inertia."
Workshop co-leader O. Kenrik Duru, MD, MS, commented, "As health care professionals, we have to recognize that if certain clinical approaches aren't working, we need to
stop and consider other potential barriers. Our patients experience a host of barriers,
such as psychosocial issues, social determinants of health, and lack of health literacy.
What skills do we need to improve to work with our patients on these barriers?"
"This isn't about working harder; it's about working better," said Eden Miller, DO, the
other workshop co-leader. "If we don't deal with inertia in our practice, it will deal with
us. Our goal with this program was to identify a few small changes within the practice
that could have a big impact in our patients' health."
These workshops are a part of the ADA's initiative titled "Overcoming Therapeutic
Inertia: Accelerating Diabetes Care for Life." Additional workshops will take place
on November 13 in Chicago, IL, November 20 in Baltimore, MD, and February 24 in
Phoenix, AZ. For more information, visit professional.diabetes.org/therapeuticinertia.
ADA's Overcoming Therapeutic Inertia initiative is supported by Founding Sponsors
Abbott, AstraZeneca, Merck, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi, and Strategic Sponsors Dexcom,
Janssen, Lilly, and Medtronic.
